Butcher and Smelt team up for Toyota Gazoo Racing UK in BTCC

Wednesday, January 27 2021

Rory Butcher and Sam Smelt will spearhead Toyota Gazoo Racing UK's assault on the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship in 2021, after the team confirmed that the former Independents' Champion and series returnee will pilot its pair of Toyota Corollas.

The team expands to two cars for this season, following several seasons with a single entry for Tom Ingram. Race-winner Butcher will lead the team's efforts this season after featuring as a title condender in two of his three full seasons as full-time driver in the BTCC.

This is the Scotsman's first season as a works driver, and he's joined by Smelt who returns to the BTCC for the first time since 2018. Smelt was in just his second season out of karts when he last drove in the series, but returns to the paddock with two seasons of British GT Championship experience under his belt.

Team Principal Christian Dick, said: "We're all delighted to welcome Rory and Sam to the team for the 2021 campaign. We believe they represent the perfect blend of youth and experience and that they can help to drive us forward as we target all three titles for the first time in the BTCC.
"Rory's calibre is clear to see. It's easy to forget sometimes that he only has three full seasons in the championship under his belt, because he drives with all the confidence and panache of somebody that has been involved in the BTCC for much longer. Sam is somebody with whom we have forged a strong relationship during the past 12 months. He has been a huge asset to our British GT programme, both in terms of his performance inside the cockpit and his developmental skills out of it."

The BTCC visits the Brands Hatch Indy and Grand Prix circuits, Donington Park, Oulton Park and Snetterton this year across a revised schedule. You can click here to view all dates.
