Sutton fastest overall in Snetterton BTCC test

Friday, July 07 2017

Ashley Sutton (Subaru) set the fastest overall time of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship's two-day test period which took place at Snetterton this week (Wednesday and Thursday), ahead of the second half of the championship, which kicks off at the Norfolk circuit at the end of the month (29-30 July).

Sutton's Thursday morning time of 1m57.130s was three-tenths of a second faster than the best time of Eurotech Honda driver Jack Goff, who set the pace on Wednesday. Goff remained second though, with an effort just five-hundredths of a second shy of Sutton's best time.

Tom Ingram, who led the championship earlier in the year, onboard his Speedworks Toyota Avensis, was third, whilst Jake Hill was another young charger on the pace, ending up fourth in his Volkswagen CC.

Tom Chilton, who returned to the championship this year to spearhead Vauxhall's manufacturer-backed return, was positive about the circuit at the test, saying: "I absolutely love [Snetterton - it's] a beautiful circuit. We've figured out some good things, we're sure we've got more to come and it's exciting, the second half of the year should be very strong for us.

"It's always the halfway point at Snetterton and to do a two-day test before coming to race here is useful especially for a new car. What I like is that you've got three second gear corners, and then you've got a few third, fourth and fifth gear corners. You've got it all, plus the corners where you brake hard in a straight line, corners where you brake and turn - I like all that because you're balancing the car on the brakes as you're turning. So it really gives you a chance to feel the car in pitch and roll, which is really good when you're trying to get the right spring and roll bar combination and then linking it all into the damping for the long corners, it's really enjoyable."
