Simpson springs to the top in Snetterton BTCC Free Practice one

Saturday, July 28 2018

Matt Simpson posted the fastest time in the opening Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship free practice session this morning, as the Diamond Double weekend got underway at Snetterton.

The session started in damp conditions after a downpour this morning, with cars starting on wet tyres but switching to dry rubber by the end. Simpson's time, set in his Honda Civic Type-R, was just 0.054s quicker than the fellow Honda-runner of Chris Smiley, both posting late efforts to hit the top.

They usurped Mike Bushell in the Volkswagen CC, who topped much of the session, with the Mercedes A Class of Tom Oliphant in fourth. BMW driver Andrew Jordan was just 0.027s away in fifth ahead of the Audi of Ollie Jackson.

Adam Morgan was next up in his Mercedes in seventh, 0.035s ahead of the MG of Rory Butcher in eighth, with Colin Turkington and Senna Proctor completing the top-10.

The session didn't go without incident, Tom Ingram ground to a halt forcing a red flag, while the Vauxhall pairing of Josh Cook and Senna Proctor came together early on after being caught out by the tricky early conditions.

The second BTCC free practice session starts at 12.10 with the usual qualifying session at 15.10. The session just for the 'Diamond Double' completes the day at 17.40.
