Ingram controls Snetterton BTCC opener from lights to flag

Sunday, August 04 2019

Tom Ingram produced a commanding drive in the first Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship race of the day, leading from lights to flag in his Team Toyota GB with Ginsters Corolla at Snetterton this afternoon (Sunday).

Ingram seized the initiative from the off by making the most of his pole position start to lead into Riches on lap one, and keep the Halfords Yuasa Racing Honda Civic Type R of Dan Cammish rbehind him.

From there, Ingram led every lap of the race and controlled his gap at the front to lead Cammish over the line by just over three seconds at the end of the race. This despite Cammish setting the fastest lap of the race second time around.

The leading duo were in a race of their own for much of the race distance, though Tom Chilton maintained close pursuit throughout the opening stages. We'll never know whether or not Chilton could have challenged the leading two, however, as he was eliminated from the running by a puncture at Coram on lap five.

Third place instead went to Sam Tordoff in the first of Cobra Sport AmD's two older model Honda Civic Type Rs, following a calm drive where he circulated untroubled. It was a similar story for championship leader Colin Turkington in the previously dominant BMW 330i M Sport, who quietly collected another solid points haul in fourth place.

If Turkington's race was quiet, his team mate in the official BMW squad Andrew Jordan's was anything but. Jordan spent much of the race distance battling to squeeze past the Vauxhall Astra of two-time BTCC champion Jason Plato. Jordan finally saw his opportunity on lap 10 and secured fifth position after running side-by-side with Plato at Nelson and making the move stick at Bomb Hole.

Plato seemed to struggle a little for pace thereafter, but managed to hold onto sixth place from his team-mate Rob Collard, with Ollie Jackson and Matt Simpson right behind them too. Jake Hill completed the top-ten in his Audi S3.

Rory Butcher fell just short of the top-ten with 11th as he aims to keep the pressure on in the title fight, just holding off hard charging Subaru ace Ashley Sutton on the line.

Chilton was joined in retirement by Matt Neal, whose car came to a stop on just the second lap of the race and Adam Morgan whose car suffered a gearbox failure mid-way through the race. All three will have their work cut out if they're to recover to the points in race two.
