Shakey strikes back to keep O'Halloran from the top

Friday, June 30 2017

Shane 'Shakey' Byrne was back on top after the opening two free practice sessions at Snetterton for the fifth round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship as the defending champion fired the Be Wiser Ducati under the lap record to hold off Jason O'Halloran.

The session featured a frantic changing of positions with Byrne and O'Halloran trading blows in their bid to end the opening day fastest. The pair had both been nudged down the order when Josh Brookes launches himself to the top of the times with just under 20 minutes of the session remaining, however a technical problem sidelined him from the remainder of the session and he ended sixth fastest.

Byrne and O'Halloran were scrapping for the top, but Smiths Racing BMW's Peter Hickman was also closing in and he shot up to third position and remained ahead of Knockhill double race winner Jake Dixon for the local RAF Reserves Kawasaki team.

Championship leader Luke Mossey was the leading JG Speedfit Kawasaki in fifth position with his team-mate Leon Haslam returning from injury this weekend to end the day eighth fastest. McAMS Yamaha were seventh in the hands of James Ellison with Billy McConnell and Sylvain Guintoli completing the top ten.

Tyco BMW's Andy Reid was 19th on the timesheets as he makes his debut with the team this weekend.
