Tom Ingram sets the pace in opening BTCC session at Snetterton

Saturday, July 29 2017

Tom Ingram topped the opening Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship session of the weekend at Snetterton today (Saturday), heading fellow title challenger Ash Sutton by just a tenth of a second.

As the BTCC returned from its summer break, Speedworks' Ingram, Subaru's Sutton, Ciceley's Adam Morgan and Eurotech's Jack Goff were setting the pace during the opening session. All were keen to make up ground on the title standings, but for different reasons; whilst Sutton was keen to capitalise on momentum gained at Oulton Park and Croft, the other three were aiming to put two disastrous weekends behind them.

As the session wore on the BMWs climbed the order, with Colin Turkington and Andrew Jordan's 125i M-Sports taking places in the middle of the top ten, along with AmDtuning's Ollie Jackson and Handy Motorsport's Rob Austin.

With the BMWs continuing to improve, Jason Plato's Subaru entered the top ten with ten minutes remaining, although the double champion remained a second adrift of his team-mate. Meanwhile the best-placed works Honda at this time was Matt Simpson's in ninth place, whilst title leader Gordon Shedden was 16th and Matt Neal at the tail of the order.

A late improver was BTC Norlin's Chris Smiley, finding the Chevrolet Cruze to his liking. He briefly entered the top ten, to be pushed out by a fine effort from James Cole to place him eighth. Smiley got his revenge a lap later and demoted the Subaru a place.

Goff jumped a place in the final moments, but the top three remained static in the second half of the session, to put Ingram top in the first session of the second half of the season. Just a tenth adrift was Sutton, with Morgan four tenths off Ingram's time.

The second practice session takes place at 12:10
