Smith and Makinen headline opening day of truck action

Saturday, September 09 2017

The British Truck Racing Championship (BTRC) weekend at Snetterton got off to a flying start today (Saturday), with lots of frenetic action on the 300 circuit from the truck racers and a host of support categories.

The opening Division One race of the weekend was red-flagged twice, after Richard Collett and later, Mat Summerfield fell victim at the first corner on each start.

The restart was held at the end of the day, and Ryan Smith surged into an early lead from pole position, whilst fellow front-row starter Stuart Oliver fell back during the race to finish fourth behind Shane Brereton and David Jenkins.

Mika Makinen dominated the first Division Two race from pole position, heading Simon Cole to the flag by eight seconds. Third place was under dispute between Tony Smith and reigning class champion Adam Bint, with the former completing the podium. Truck debutant Paul Rivett held off Makinen's Finnish compatriot Sami Ojanen for sixth place, behind former champion Steve Powell.

The second Division Two encounter was held in damp conditions, a brief shower drenching the track, followed by a second downpour during the race. Andrew Lovenbry led at the start and built up a commanding gap to the rest, but ran very wide at the Wilson hairpin, which left the way clear for Luke Garrett to take the win. Ojanen held off John Bowler for second place, whilst race one winner Makinen could only climb to fifth place from the back of the reverse-grid, despite almost overhauling Brad Smith on the run to the chequered flag.
