Controlled race one BF3 Autumn Trophy victory for Ahmed

Saturday, October 29 2016

Pole-sitter Enaam Ahmed made a lightning start and didn't look back from there as he took a controlled victory in race one of the Duo BRDC British Formula 3 Autumn Trophy at Snetterton. Fellow front-row starter Dan Ticktum made a less impressive getaway and initially dropped to fourth but battled back to third by the chequered flag, as Douglas Motorsport's Joey Mawson claimed the runner-up spot.

After a pulsating qualifying session, which saw the top-10 drivers covered by just six-tenths of a second, it was Carlin's Ahmed that lined up at the head of the field for the first of four races in Norfolk this weekend. As the lights went out, he made a masterful getaway but Double R Racing's Dan Ticktum, starting alongside Ahmed on the front-row, was slow away and he dropped to fourth, with Mawson moving into second and James Pull taking third having started sixth.

Further back, Tarun Reddy lost ground and he was demoted to sixth having lined up on the grid in fourth, with his Double R team-mate, Kiwi Marcus Armstrong, gained one position to run in seventh at the end of the opening lap.

After losing two positions at the start, Dan Ticktum was soon on the back of Pull and after harrying him for a number of corners, used the long back straight to draw alongside the Carlin man before sliding down the inside under braking at Brundle to take third. Meanwhile up front, Ahmed was pushing hard and he opened his lead up over Mawson to over 2.5s at quarter distance.

Pull, having seen Ticktum go past, was coming under significant attack from South African Callan O'Keeffe and once more, saw a position disappear down the Bentley Straight as the Fortec Motorsports man got a great run out of the previous corner, Williams.

Whilst the Double R pairing of Reddy and Armstrong closed up on Pull, neither driver could mount a serious attack on the Brit for fifth position.

As the race headed into its closing stages, German Formula 4 Champion Mawson threatened to throw down a serious challenge to Ahmed up front, closing to within 1.282s with three laps remaining. However Ahmed responded, upping his own pace and opening his lead up to 1.416s on the very next lap and saw out the final tour without incident to open his Duo BRDC British F3 Autumn Trophy account with a win.

Behind Ahmed, Mawson and Ticktum came O'Keefe and Pull, with Reddy and Armstrong line astern in sixth and seventh. Eighth went to Douglas Motorsport's Jamie Caroline with Cameron Das and Ben Hingeley rounding out the top-10.

With the fastest laps from race one setting the grid for race two, Dan Ticktum will start on pole position with Joey Mawson for company on the front-row. Enaam Ahmed will line up third with Marcus Armstrong fourth and Ben Hingeley fifth. You can follow all the action from race two, which gets underway at 16:15, through live timing and updates on the official British F3 website.
