Armstrong tops second Friday practice at Snetterton

Friday, October 28 2016

Kiwi youngster Marcus Armstrong saved the best till last as he produced a fine final lap to top the second Friday practice session of the day at Snetterton, ahead of Double R Racing team-mate Dan Ticktum and Douglas Motorsport's Joey Mawson.

The cold but dry weather continued in Norfolk for the final half-hour session prior to the lunch break, with every driver keen to make the most of the track time on offer ahead of this weekend's Duo BRDC British Formula 3 Autumn Trophy. In the early stages, it was 16-year-old Armstrong who vaulted to the head of the standings, a 1m43.997s lap putting him half-a-second clear of Ticktum and the Hillspeed with Cliff Dempsey Racing car of Jordan Cane.

As times threatened to be improved, the red flags came out to bring a halt to the session after Cane's Hillspeed team-mate Abdullah Al Rawahi came to grief out on circuit, making contact with the barriers and damaging his front-end, thus ending his session.

With just over 10 minutes left on the clock, the pit lane re-opened and a gaggle of cars were quick to return to the track. After warming up their Pirelli tyres, personal best sectors began to be set and it was Ticktum who moved to the top of the order with a 1m43.882s. Carlin's Enaam Ahmed slotted into second with Armstrong in third.

The Kiwi responded and briefly re-took top spot but on his next tour, Ticktum went 0.125s quicker to push Armstrong back down the order. German Formula 4 Champion Joey Mawson went third fastest with Ahmed fourth and first practice pace-setter Hingeley moving into fifth.

The order would be shifted about once more though as the chequered flag came out with Hingeley's Fortec Motorsports team-mate South African Callan O'Keeffe going fourth quickest. Hingeley himself found more time and snatched that position away, pushing O'Keeffe down to fifth but up front, Marcus Armstrong continued his impressive start to his BRDC British F3 life by posting a 1m43.221s, which was good enough to take top spot. Ticktum, 0.126s slower than his team-mate, held second ahead of Mawson, Hingeley and O'Keefe.

Jordan Cane finished sixth quickest ahead of Ahmed and James Pull, with Tarun Reddy and US F4 Champion Cameron Das rounding out the top-10.

The third practice session of the day gets underway at 14:10 this afternoon and you can follow all the action through live timing and updates on the official British F3 website.
