Factory-backed McLarens to compete in British and Blancpain GT

Wednesday, March 09 2016

McLaren-backed supercars will compete in the British GT Championship and Blancpain GT Series this year, including an Ecurie Ecosse-liveried 650S GT3 in the British championship, which gets underway at Brands Hatch on 16/17 April.

The legendary Scottish team won the British GT Championship in 2014 in partnership with Barwell Motorsport and their BMW Z4 narrowly missed out on last year's title. Whilst Barwell has switched manufacturer to Lamborghini, Ecurie Ecosse teams up with the new Garage 59 operation, set up by McLaren to support racing and trackday customers.

Ecurie Ecosse has committed at least one 650S GT3 to the British GT Championship, with a second entry expected to follow. With Marco Attard moving onto pastures new, Alasdair McCaig will return to the series that he contested in 2012, joined by McLaren factory driver Rob Bell.

Paying tribute to Ecurie Ecosse's former partners, McCaig said: "Barwell laid the foundations for my GT racing knowledge and I owe that to Mark Lemmer and his fantastic team. As for the season ahead, I'm looking forward to driving alongside Rob who has a wealth of experience and I am sure we will be challenging for top results from the first round."

EEMcLaren GT boss, Andrew Kirkaldy said: "It will be very special to have the opportunity to race with the iconic Ecurie Ecosse team, which has an unrivalled heritage in sportscar racing.

"The team are in a great position going in to the championship assault, and Rob brings significant experience which will help them hit the ground running from the first round. He will be a great partner for Alasdair in terms of his significant experience of the 650S GT3 and also his knowledge of the British circuits."

Meanwhile Bell will also be contesting the Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup, which visits Brands Hatch on 7/8 May. The Garage 59-entered 650S GT3 will be shared with Alvaro Parente. A second car is also expected in this series, and talks are believed to be ongoing with former F1 driver Bruno Senna, who has McLaren GT experience.

"It is great to have the chance to race back on home soil," said Bell, who finished third in last year's Blancpain Sprint feature race at Brands Hatch. "Since joining McLaren GT as a Factory Driver in 2011 I have had the opportunity to race at some of the world's most iconic circuits, but it is always special to race back on my old stomping grounds with the support of the British fans, who are the best in the world.
