Steven Powell holds off Stuart Oliver in Snetterton truck opener

Saturday, September 19 2015

Steven Powell held on from pole position to win the first of this weekend's British Truck Racing Championship's five rounds at Snetterton today (Saturday), with Stuart Oliver taking the Division One spoils in second place.

At the start, Powell made a great getaway to lead the race and quickly began to leave the rest of Division Two behind, whilst in the top class, Matt Summerfield held onto his lead, as Oliver struggled through the opening corners. Further back, Ray Coleman, Shane Brereton and Richard Collett all suffered in the initial skirmishes.

Steve Thomas followed Summerfield in Division One as Oliver, Ryan Smith and David Jenkins followed in hot pursuit of the slower machines a few seconds up the road. The trio gained a place at Coram on lap two, when Collett spun wildly into the infield. Great co-operation helped them to reel in Summerfield as the Division Two backmarkers were cleared, but all the while Powell was getting further away from his rivals in the overall lead.

The ceasefire from the Division One quartet didn't last long, and split into two groups on the Senna Straight. Jenkins claimed third in class when Smith ran wide into Montreal, whilst Oliver passed Summerfield at Agostini.

Oliver claimed third overall with a couple of laps remaining, then quickly gained second from Adam Bint. Summerfield followed on, but a sideways moment for Smith at Agostini sent Jenkins into a spin, delaying his progress.

At the start of the final lap, Oliver had just posted the fastest lap so far, but with eleven seconds in arrears, being eight seconds a lap faster wouldn't help him take the win. Nevertheless, the ten-time champion tried his best, and closed to within 3.5 seconds of Powell, the race victor.

Summerfield retained third place, a valuable result for his title chances, with Smith fourth, and Thomas fifth, gaining a place over Jenkins after the latter's late-race spin.

Adam Bint was seventh overall, and second in Division Two, ahead of class rival Luke Garrett. Division One's Oly Janes and Coleman completed the top ten.

Race two will take place at 5:50pm today.
