Brookes top of the times as Smrz closes in for Ducati

Wednesday, May 27 2015

Josh Brookes was immediately back on the pace in the opening session of the official MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship test at Snetterton, lapping under his existing circuit record to keep his opposition at bay, despite Jakub Smrz closing to within 0.024s on his final lap.

Brookes had set the pace throughout the session, despite faster laps from championship leader James Ellison, defending champion Shane 'Shakey' Byrne in the final five minutes. However Jakub Smrz was the rider to take the biggest steps forward with the Motor Rapido Ducati to leap up to second on his final flying lap before the chequered flag, slashing 0.236s off his best time from yesterday.

Ellison held on to third despite Byrne's attempts in the closing stages whilst Stuart Easton on the second PBM Kawasaki held fifth place as he aims to build on his victory from the previous round at Oulton Park.

Chris Walker was sixth fastest for the Be Wiser Kawasaki team as they also made positive progress ahead of Lee Jackson who broke into the top ten for Buildbase BMW who split the Be Wiser Kawasakis with Danny Buchan in eighth. Jason O'Halloran and Howie Mainwaring completed the top ten.
