Snetterton podiums the goal for Smrz

Monday, May 19 2014

Jakub Smrz is eager to return to Snetterton for the next round of the MCE British Superbike Championship (13/14/15 June) as the Czech rider bids to build on his impressive form at the Norfolk circuit as he targets the team's first podium finish.

The Millsport Ducati team were new to the grid this season and with confidence building throughout the pre-season tests, Smrz is feeling confident about smashing the previous best result of the Panigale, an eighth place scored by Matteo Baiocco in 2013.

"During the tests and opening rounds my Millsport Ducati Panigale has been getting better and we have a pretty good base setting," said Smrz. "There are still things we are working on, but every time we try changes we can see a difference on track and I´m very happy with this. Of course it´s not easy because there is not much data to build on as this year the lap times are a lot faster, our engine is a different spec and we're using 17 inch wheels, but it's fun and I enjoy every lap on track and every minute with my team!"

Smrz set an impressive pace in pre-season testing, pushing towards the top of the timesheets and setting himself up for the opening two rounds at Brands Hatch and Oulton Park in fine style; however the Millsport Ducati rider was disappointed with two top ten finishes plus an eleventh place from the opening four races.

"There are already a lot of positives but also we had a few problems," said Smrz. "After some good tests on tracks where we knew we would be fast, we were still realistic going into the first two rounds. Our pace all weekend at round one was very good and it showed a lot of potential, but the results were not perfect. Oulton Park is probably one of the most difficult tracks for us and our goal there was the top ten, but I had a painful back problem. On raceday it didn´t look like I would finish both races but we scored a tenth and eleventh place, so that was not bad at all considering how I felt."

In the official pre-season test at Snetterton Smrz had been second only to Shane 'Shakey' Byrne and now he is looking forward to returning to one of his favourite circuits on the calendar in just over three weeks' time. Smrz is hoping that the team will be ready to challenge for the Panigale's first MCE BSB podium and Ducati's first top three finish since August 2011 at Brands Hatch.

"My team are making changes to find improvements for the next race at Snetterton," added Smrz. "I really like Snetterton because of its character and it's like a European style track. I´ve always been fast there and it is where I scored one of my best results last year so it could be very good weekend for us. We just need to continue working hard. Our goal is to do the best and fight for the podium! It is not an easy target but not impossible."
