Hoy joined by Le Mans history-maker for Snetterton

Wednesday, June 18 2014

Sir Chris Hoy will have a new Avon Tyres British GT Championship team-mate this weekend at Snetterton (21/22 June), with Wolfgang Reip joining him fresh from making history at Le Mans.

The Olympic cycling legend made his championship debut earlier this year, and so far has competed in four races alongside regular co-driver Alex Buncombe, the pair taking a season-best finish of seventh last time out at Silverstone. However, with Buncombe racing in Germany this weekend, Nissan has drafted in Reip to join him at the wheel of the GT-R Nismo GT3.

Belgian Reip heads to Snetterton after competing at Le Mans with the experimental Nissan ZEOD, which was tested at the Norfolk circuit. Whilst the car retired early in the race, it achieved the team's aim of running a lap of the eight mile circuit on electric power alone, an unprecedented feat.

Reip, a graduate of the Nissan GT Academy programme, is looking forward to his return to petrol power this weekend. "It is good timing for me to compete in British GT this weekend," he said.  "I know the GT3 GT-R very well after doing two championships in it last year but I hadn't actually driven it for seven months before this weekend. Snetterton will be a very useful refresher for me."

Hoy currently lies 14th in the British GT Championship standings and seventh in the Blancpain Gentleman Drivers table. Whilst his ultimate aim is to race in the Le Mans 24-hour event, he remains firmly focused on the present. "I want to make the most of this and do the best I can," he said. "I'm aware of how great an opportunity this is, racing a GT3 car in the British GT series. Many would like to do it."

Tickets for the British GT and F3 Championships at Snetterton on 21/22 June are available on the gate for £14 on Saturday and £22 on Sunday, with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information, or to book tickets click here.
