Russell pips Palmer to pole in tight Snetterton F4 qualifying

Saturday, June 21 2014

Championship leader George Russell has claimed his first F4 pole position, edging HHC Motorsport's Will Palmer by just 0.004s in an extremely close qualifying session at Snetterton.

Palmer led the way for much of the session, before Russell put in a 1m50.121s with less than 10 minutes remaining. Palmer looked on course to improve his time late in the session, setting an overall best first sector, but just missing out.

Palmer's HHC Motorsport team mate Raoul Hyman claimed third on the grid, 0.071s off top spot, with Nicolas Beer constantly improving throughout the session to set the fourth quickest time for Sean Walkinshaw Racing.

Lanan Racing's Arjun Maini was fifth fastest ahead of Sennan Fielding with Hillspeed's Gustavo Lima seventh. Struan Moore set the eighth quickest time for Lanan Racing, ahead of MGR's Chris Middlehurst and Douglas Motorsport's Diego Menchaca tenth, with 0.946s covering the top-10.

A late red flag caused by a stranded car at Bombhole resulted in the session being red flagged with two minutes remaining.

The first F4 race of the weekend will start at 15.10.

Speaking after the session, Russell commented: "I'm really happy to get my first pole. I've been quick here in the pre-season testing we've done so it's good to finally get here and great to get pole.

"I think we've definitely got the pace to get my fourth win of the year but you never know what will happen in the races. If I win this race I equal the F4 race win record, which would be a fantastic achievement in only the third race weekend of the year. We're in a great position to get results this weekend."

Russell's pole means he claims £150 and a trophy as part of the Jack Cavill Pole Position Cup. "I'm not too sure where the money will be going, but I'll have a think and I'm sure I'll spend it wisely!"
