Byrne wins as last lap mistake costs Brookes at Snetterton

Sunday, June 15 2014

Shane 'Shakey' Byrne refused to buckle under the early pressure from Josh Brookes and James Ellison in the opening MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship race at Snetterton as he claimed his fourth win of the season.

The incident-packed opening lap saw a premature end to the race for Jakub Smrz and Julien Da Costa who slid off at Montreal, with Ben Wilson and Michael Rutter also crashing out a corner later at Palmer. The Nissan GT-R safety car was deployed and the pack lined up with Byrne ahead after some early moves with Brookes followed by Ellison, Tommy Bridewell and Dan Linfoot.

The race resumed and Brookes and Ellison were hot on the heels of the championship leader with the Lloyds British GBmoto Racing Kawasaki rider moving to second with an impressive move around the outside at Riches on the eighth lap. The Milwaukee Yamaha rider immediately fought back and the pair touched on the exit of Montreal with Ellison still holding the position. The Australian had to wait a few laps later before he could make a move to stick at Brundle as he then closed in on Byrne.

Brookes was closing and on the final lap he looked like he could be within striking distance of his rival, but a mistake cost him as he ran across the grass and rejoined, pushing him into the clutches of Ellison, but he was able to hold the position to the line.

Tommy Bridewell equalled his best result of the season in fourth place after dropping off the lead group in the closing stages of the race on the second of the Milwaukee Yamahas with Ryuichi Kiyonari holding off a charge from Chris Walker who had worked his way from 20th up to sixth. He had closed on the BMW rider after an intense fight with Dan Linfoot on the Quattro Plant Kawasaki, with a stunning move at Coram giving him the advantage at the half way point.

Patric Muff had closed in on the pair ahead of him but held eighth position with the Tyco Suzuki pairing of John Hopkins and Josh Waters completing the top ten.
