Jake Hughes takes pole in frantic Snetterton qualifying

Saturday, September 07 2013

Lanan Racing's Jake Hughes has claimed his fifth pole position of the season in a thrilling qualifying session at Snetterton this morning.

The championship leader battled for pole throughout the session with Team KBS' James Fletcher, with the pair changing position frequently throughout the 20 minute session. But it was Hughes who ultimately emerged on top with a time of 1m51.241s, and just 0.025s ahead of Fletcher. However Fletcher was relegated to the back of the grid after qualifying, due to a technical infringement relating to the rear gurney.

Hughes' new team mate at Lanan Racing therefore claimed second having been third fastest in the session, just edging out Hillspeed's Struan Moore. Moore was a winner here in June when F4 last visited Norfolk, and third on the grid is his best qualifying performance of the season.

Charlie Robertson took fourth for HHC Motorsport, with championship third-placed driver Jack Barlow fifth for Sean Walkinshaw Racing. Triple race winner Matt Bell took sixth, having been quickest early in the session for Douglas Team E-Lites, with Seb Morris, currently second in the championship, seventh for Hillspeed.

Matty Graham was eighth fastest for Sean Walkinshaw Racing, ahead of Mark Godwin Racing's Diego Menchaca. MGR's new recruit, Matt Mason, completed the top-10, and was less than a second away from the quickest time of the session.

Speaking afterwards, Hughes enthused: "The last lap was an extremely good one, and I didn't make any mistakes and kept it clean. It's a great way to start the race weekend.

"I've always found Snetterton suits me very well and we've always been quick here. Qualifying last time in the wet didn't go quite so well and we were dead last! But to change those fortunes this time around is a great way to start and now I need to focus on scoring consistent points throughout this weekend. F4 is probably the most competitive category at this level so pole means nothing unless I convert it to big points at the end of the race. I just need to do the best job I can."

The first F4 race of the weekend is due to start at 14.40 this afternoon.
