Lowes tackles Byrne for top spot ahead of qualifying

Saturday, July 06 2013

Samsung Honda's Alex Lowes saved his best until last in the third free practice session at Snetterton to push Shane 'Shakey' Byrne to second on his final lap ahead of this afternoon's Datatag Extreme qualifying.

Ryuichi Kiyonari had set the initial pace before the session was briefly red flagged when PJ Jacobsen crashed his Tyco Suzuki; the American was not injured and was able to get back out in the session once it resumed. Padgetts Honda's Jakub Smrz then had a spell at the top of the timesheets before Lowes pushed ahead of his Honda rival.

Kiyonari then upped the pace as he went ahead of his team-mate at the top of the times as the seven time Snetterton race winner bids to move inside the top six this weekend. Byrne though was soon retaliating to the Samsung Honda charge and moved fastest with just over five minutes remaining. Lowes though was back on the attack and a last lap flyer put him back at the top in the final seconds ahead of qualifying.

Byrne held off Kiyonari with Josh Brookes ending the session fourth fastest as he remained ahead of Smrz. Milwaukee Yamaha's James Ellison moved up the order to sixth ahead of Keith Farmer who crashed out towards the end of the session. James Westmoreland, Tommy Bridewell and Chris Walker completed the top ten.
