MSV's guide to what to look out for in 2013

Tuesday, January 01 2013

Happy new year from all at MSV! 2013 promises to be another superb year with lots of great things planned. Here are a few to look forward to and help you beat the January blues:

Shakey v Kiyonari

2013 is shaping up to be another standout season for the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship but this time there will be an added element that will make it particularly special. Reigning champion Shakey Byrne set his sights on breaking series records after taking his third title in October but he didn't count on fellow triple champ Ryuichi Kiyonari returning to the fray. The pair will be going head-to-head in the 'war for four' titles!

DTM - 19 May

After leaving Brands Hatch last May, who'd have put money on Gary Paffett missing out on his second DTM title by the end of the year? That he lost out to Bruno Spengler, the man who had so often arrived in Kent only to see his championship aspirations start to slide away, just added bitterness to his defeat. This is sure to make him more determined when he returns to his home circuit in the spring, but he won't have Jamie Green's assistance, for his former team mate will be leading Audi's charge, whilst Andy Priaulx now has experience under his belt.

British Touring Car Championship opener

There's a new name at the top of the British Touring Car Championship table and Gordon Shedden will be back to defend his title against perennial rivals Matt Neal and Jason Plato. But there are plenty of new combinations to look forward to when the cars roll out at Brands Hatch in late March. Motorbase's NGTC Focus is getting faster, whilst WSR have switched to the new rules with a BMW 1 Series. Meanwhile Dartford's Tony Gilham is starting to build up a powerbase in the series with Team HARD expanding, having recently signed Tom Onslow-Cole and Clio Cup champion Jack Goff.

Oulton Park Gold Cup

Oulton Park celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2013 and everyone is invited to the party in August when the annual Gold Cup takes place. The feast of nostalgia is sure to be extra special, with surprises planned in addition to the racing, displays and demonstrations that make up the Bank Holiday weekend in Cheshire.

Sir Chris Hoy's Radical move

Britain's most successful Olympian is still deciding over a farewell performance in 2014's Commonwealth Games, but in the meantime he's ready to swap pedals for pistons. Sir Chris will be taking part in the MSVR-run Radical SR1 Cup for his first season of racing and the lifelong petrolhead could find himself bitten by the racing bug!

The festival season

Two tin top icons of the 60s celebrate golden anniversaries in 2013: The Mini Cooper S and Lotus Cortina. Both will be celebrated at the Mini and Lotus Festivals, taking place at Brands Hatch, in June and August respectively. In addition, MSV will be hosting the Masters Festival in Kent, plus Vintage car and bike festivals at Cadwell Park and Snetterton. In the meantime look out for two great new festivals being announced shortly...

Rush

The most anticipated film of the new year promises to be the best motor racing movie ever made and it has a superb pedigree. Apollo 13 Director Ron Howard teams up with writer Peter Morgan, who he collaborated with on Frost/Nixon, and both have an excellent record on dramas based on recent history. Not only this but the story of James Hunt and Niki Lauda's rivalry will be a great opportunity to play 'spot the MSV circuit' as Brands Hatch, Snetterton and Cadwell Park were all used by the film crew. The former, of course, is sure to feature prominently as the 1976 British Grand Prix provided one of the season's flashpoints.

BRDC Formula 4

MSV and the British Racing Drivers' Club have teamed up to produce a brand new series for young drivers, many making their single seater debuts. The Ralph Firman (of Van Diemen fame)-produced car is due to be unveiled at the Autosport International Show in January and the first round takes place in April. On the way to the inaugural champion being crowned there is sure to be lots of thrilling racing, as tomorrow's generation of stars fight for the racing world's attention.
