Barwell increases Aston Martin presence on British GT grid

Saturday, January 26 2013

Leading Avon Tyres British GT Championship team Barwell Motorsport will run an Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 for former Britcar racers Mark Poole and Richard Abra this year, starting with the opening round at Oulton Park this Easter (30 March/1 April).

The Barwell entry is the second V12 Vantage to be confirmed for the 2013 season, which also marks Aston Martin's centenary year. Poole and Abra have raced one of the legendary marque's cars previous, competing in the Aston Martin GT4 Challenge in 2011. A race win, four pole positions and three fastest laps led to Abra being named 'Best Performing Driver' by the Aston Martin Owners Club that year.

Double Championship winner Barwell Motorsport is expected to announce further details of its full British GT campaign in the coming weeks. In 2012 the squad scored a race win with a BMW Z4 under the revived Ecurie Ecosse banner.

"This is only my third year of racing, and the most exciting season to date," said Poole. "The car is superb, and I'm viewing this season as a learning year, getting used to GT3 machinery - partnering with Barwell, who have a solid history of success preparing racing Aston Martins is without doubt the ideal place for Richard and I to be this year."

Abra added: "For us, British GT has always been the aim of where we want to be, it's been the goal for a while now. Everything we've raced in so far, we've won in, but we're under no illusions about how big a step up this will be for us. The championship is going from strength to strength and while there's a lot of competition this year, I'm ready and excited to get started."

"We're thrilled to extend our highly successful relationship with Aston Martin Racing, and the Vantage GT3 is an exceptional car," said Team Principal Mark Lemmer, whose outfit has been an Official Partner Team of AMR since 2008. "We worked with Mark and Richard at the tail end of last year and they were unlucky to not come away with the win due to a racing incident. We see big potential in them and hope to enable both drivers to achieve their exciting goals in 2013 and beyond."

The Avon Tyres British GT Championship visits Oulton Park on 30 March/1 April, Snetterton 300 on 15/16 June and Brands Hatch GP on 10/11 August. Tickets are available from £18, with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click on the links.
