Tordoff heads MG team mate Plato in second BTCC practice

Saturday, August 03 2013

Sam Tordoff shaded MG team leader Jason Plato in second practice ahead of Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship qualifying at Snetterton today (Saturday), as the team continued to dominate proceedings.

It didn't take long for the MGs to assume their place at the top of the table and whilst Tordoff enjoyed a brief moment of glory, his team leader felt obliged to head the order once again. So imperious were they that the rest were over as second adrift at this point.

However Andrew Jordan managed to split the MG pairing but with eight tenths to make up he still had work to do. When Tordoff demoted the Pirtek driver back to third, it was by fractions, leaving Plato a long way ahead still.

Attention then turned to qualifying form, with a flurry of activity in the pitlane as drivers headed out chasing one-lap pace. Dave Newsham was the first to benefit, moving the Speedworks Toyota up to third place behind the MGs.

Reigning champion Gordon Shedden had been very quiet at this point, his car some way down the order. This changed with five minutes to go, when he hauled the works Honda up to second. He was still over half a second away from Plato, but his next effort did at least bring him within five tenths.

In the end it took another MG to topple the double champion. Tordoff, a winner here in the support categories, lopped two tenths off his team leader's best. He even bettered this by a few fractions on his final effort to consolidate his position.

Shedden stayed in third place but will need to find over half a second, whilst Newsham was fourth, in front of Jordan and the Toyota of Adam Morgan. Mat Jackson headed Matt Neal, Colin Turkington and Jack Goff. Meanwhile Liam Griffin headed David Nye for Jack Sears Trophy bragging rights.

BTCC Qualifying will take place at 15:20 today.
