Summerfield fights past Oliver for trucks race three win

Monday, August 26 2013

Reigning British Truck Racing champion Matt Summerfield fought his way past legend Stuart Oliver to claim his second win of the Trucks Superprix weekend in race three at Snetterton today (Monday 26 August).

Starting sixth on the grid, Summerfield was up to third by the third corner of the first lap, taking advantage of a slow start from pole sitter Ben Horne who slipped from first to sixth.

But it was Oliver who made the best start, plunging around the outside of Horne at Riches and then passing the quick starting Richard Collett around the outside of Palmer to lead within three corners having started third.

Oliver, a nine time British Truck Racing champion then stretched out a good lead to cross the line 1.3 seconds ahead of Summerfield, who had claimed second by the end of the opening lap.

But it was clear that Summerfield had an advantage over Oliver, and hovered right behind the former champion for several laps, with just inches separating the two leviathans at times.

But a strong move at Riches on the penultimate lap saw Summerfield make slight contact with Oliver, enough to force his way through into the lead and take the win. Oliver, perhaps slightly rattled by the contact then ran wide and lost hope of retaking the lead, eventually finishing 1.8 seconds adrift of Summerfield.

David Jenkins claimed third ahead of yesterday's race one winner Steve Thomas with Collett fifth. Pole sitter Horne took sixth place ahead of Division Two winner Brian Burt. Local contender Jim Bennett claimed 11th overall and fifth in Division Two.
