Matt Summerfield surges to victory in opening truck race

Monday, August 27 2012

Matt Summerfield has claimed a dominant win in today's opening Delphi British Truck Racing Championship race on the Snetterton 300 circuit.

The championship leader started from pole position and never looked back, commandeering his MAN ERF to an eight second win from Steve Thomas' MAN TGX who in turn was a long way ahead of third place finisher Richard Collett in his MAN TGA.

There was drama almost right from the off, and as the field plunged through Riches on the opening lap, David Jenkins lost control of his MAN TGA and collided with father and son pairing Heinz-Werner and Sascha Lenz. All three continued but the contact and subsequent trip through the gravel allowed the lead trio of Summerfield, Thomas and Collett to open a significant margin at the front.

Further round, local man Jim Bennett spun at Hamilton and was fortunate not to be collected by the other runners. By the end of the lap, Summerfield already had a two second advantage from Thomas and Collett. The big gainer in the opening exchanges was Ben Horne, who took advantage of the various dramas to move into fourth place from seventh on the grid.

The recovering Jenkins was up to seventh and made that sixth by the end of the second lap, but that was as high up as he could manage, with the loss of time proving too significant to make up any further ground and finished sixth.

The Lenz's also recovered sufficiently to finish fifth and seventh with father Heinz-Werner ahead of son Sashca. Heinz-Werner was perhaps unlucky not to move higher up the order after engaging in a race long battle with fourth place finisher Horne

No-one could get close to Summerfield though, who lapped consistently around a second clear than the chasing pack to claim a seemingly easy win.

A delighted Summerfield said afterwards; "We've got some good performance out of the truck, every change we make seems to work and we go faster each time!"

Division Two honours were taken by Graham Powell ahead of James Aikenhead and Jim Bennett.
