James Cole fastest in third Snetterton F2 test session

Wednesday, March 30 2011

James Cole topped the third session of Formula Two testing at Snetterton in a rain-affected hour that saw most of the field return to the pits after just 15 minutes of running. He headed Christopher Zanella and fellow Briton Daniel Cammish. Cole's time of 1:39.767s was set in the opening moments before the rain became more persistent.

Alex Brundle and Jack Clarke were fourth and fifth ahead of Tobias Hegewald and first session leader Miki Monras. The drizzle was enough to leave a damp surface and when drivers returned to the track, they were on wet-weather tyres and over fifteen seconds off the earlier pace.

Many of the drivers ventured out to experience the wet conditions, several of them looking to trial wet weather in an F2 car for the first time.

Speaking afterwards Cole said; "Luck was on our side this afternoon. I could see the rain was coming so I just thought I'd go straight away and on the first flying lap I could see rain drops in my visor. I thought 'let's just boost this lap' and got two laps in before it got really bad, so it's just luck of the draw but I was out at the right time.

"The wet weather tyres are good, this new layout's really slippy, very challenging but it'll be interesting to see what happens later on."
