MacDowall heads Plato for a Chevrolet 1-2 in BTCC practice 2

Saturday, August 06 2011

Alex MacDowall headed a Silverline Chevrolet 1-2 in the second and final practice session ahead of this weekend's Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship rounds on the new Snetterton 300 circuit. His fastest lap in the dying moments of the session confirmed Chevrolet's return to form as the 2011 season heads into its second half.

The Honda, Silverline Chevrolet and Airwaves teams left the pitlane in formation as the session started, however Triple 8's James Nash was first to top the timesheets but his marker was soon beaten by Jason Plato, then Tom Chilton.

The three hour break between practice sessions enabled the teams to gather data about a circuit that many of them had only run at much earlier in the year, when the surface was new and conditions much colder. However, at this point only tenths were gained, the fastest time a third of a second of an improvement on Plato's benchmark.

Plato then bettered Chilton's time as practice entered its final ten minutes but still within a few tenths of his earlier session-topper. Continuing to record fast sector times, he then moved the mark with a lap nearly a second better than he managed earlier.

James Nash was a late threat, his fastest middle sector not enough to push Plato off the lead. However it was a last-gasp effort from MacDowall, beating Plato by three hundredths that made the difference.

Nash remained third from Neal, the fastest Honda who improved by half a second but gained no places on the leaderboard. Chilton ended up fifth fastest, from Honda's Gordon Shedden, whilst fellow title contender Andrew Jordan was seventh.

Tom Boardman was eighth, giving the Special Tuning team another top ten place, with Mat Jackson ninth once again. Another impressive showing from Martin Byford netted him tenth place, the Colchester-based driver finding over a second in pace from this morning.

Qualifying for the first of three BTCC rounds will take place at 15:45 this afternoon.
